Marking a shift, the race for Los Angeles County sheriff may be up for grabs

On Tuesday, voters will decide who should take over one of the most powerful law enforcement jobs in the nation, in a contest that few may even realize appears on the crowded Los Angeles County ballot.

The race for sheriff could be historic. It pits the establishment incumbent against a lesser-funded political upstart in a battle that was never supposed to be this close.

L.A. County deputies union endorses Alex Villanueva for sheriff, boosting upset bid against Jim McDonnell

The union representing rank-and-file Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies announced its endorsement Wednesday of upstart candidate Alex Villanueva, boosting his bid to upset Sheriff Jim McDonnell in a November runoff election.

 

Runoffs are rare in sheriff’s races, with incumbents usually enjoying sizable advantages in funding and name recognition. But Villanueva won 33% of the vote in the June primary while McDonnell fell short of the majority he needed to avoid a runoff in the nonpartisan race. McDonnell, a former high-ranking member of the Los Angeles Police Department and ex-Long Beach police chief, won 48% of the vote.

Latino exteniente del sheriff se enfrentará a Jim McDonnell en elecciones de noviembre

A pocos días de haber pasado a la segunda vuelta en la elección para ser sheriff del condado de Los Ángeles, el teniente retirado Alex Villanueva dijo que esto muestra que los votantes hablaron.

La noticia ha cautivado a propios y extraños quienes aseguraban que el actual sheriff Jim McDonnell sería reelegido por un gran margen. Él llegó al puesto en el 2014 tras revelarse una serie de corrupción bajo el mando del entonces sheriff Lee Baca, quien decidió jubilarse.

Sin embargo, la campaña de Villanueva asegura que la corrupción no ha terminado bajo McDonnell . “Es más de lo mismo”, aseguró.
